Matthew Bourne: Songs from a Lost Piano
What's it about?
Calling on ghostly memories of hymns, music hall songs and pub sing-a-longs, the brilliantly maverick pianist Matthew Bourne breathes life back into some of Yorkshire's abandoned instruments. He brings with him discarded gems, including the decaying elegance of an upright passed down from mother to daughter, a legless carcass from a Wesleyan chapel and the faded glamour of a white cocktail grand.
Joined by a band that features two striking vocalists and sound manipulator Ashley Wales, Bourne becomes the ringmaster of his archaic orchestra, taking inspiration from their sonic peculiarities and eventful lives.
Alongside the stage performance is an atmospheric photographic exhibition of the pianos Matthew encountered along the way. Photographer Benjamin McMahon followed Bourne o'er hill and dale, taking portraits of pianos and people and capturing their relationship. The photographs will be exhibited in the bar area of The Venue, and as a projected exhibition in Bush Hall and De La Warr Pavilion.
