How does it work?

Essentially we look to provide a home, framework and testing ground for new ideas on a project-by-project basis.

Sometimes we will provide a small budget to get things off the ground, or it might be more complex and involve knowledge transfer.

Currently SAM Labs is an internal programme but we will be looking to open it out to the public within the coming year.

Why a lab?

It's a context in which to experiment and test new ideas and projects.

In the early stages of a project, it is often impossible to know what the true possibilities of the project may be. Accidental or unforeseen events may change the direction of a project and lead to a complete overhaul of plans.

SAM Labs aims to bring these chance findings to the fore, providing a relatively low-cost testing ground for ideas that could one day grow to be core activities of the organisation.

The aims of SAM Labs are to nourish new ideas and explore the creative, economic and social potential

Clock Watching in Music

I've just finished reading John Maeda's "The Laws of Simplicity" which although not as life changing as the blogosphere claims is still inspirational in its clarity and, well, simpleness.

SAM Workshops

Something I'm trying out as a pilot scheme is a series of professional development workshops. The sort of things I'm looking at covering are practical skills and techniques- like using software, hardware etc, more general professional advice such as promotion, fundraising and management of finance and also looking at the work of specific artists.
