Composer-Curator Summer 2015
You are: creators, makers and initiators.
You are: groundbreaking, risk taking and spearheading.
You are: Composer-Curators.
And Sound and Music wants to work with you.
The team over at Sound and Music are pretty great at listening (even if we say so ourselves!)
We listen to our audience; individuals, collectives, cohorts and partners.
We listen to the ever changing cultural environment.
We listen to you. And once we have listened, we act. Sound and Music are thrilled to introduce you to Composer-Curator, our new, reviewed and refreshed national new music touring programme.
In March this year, we held our first Composer-Curator conference, where composers from the programme met and shared their feedback with us.
In 2013 we launched the Composer-Curator programme, our ambition was to develop a national approach to supporting grassroots event-series or festivals of new music, curated and organised by composers.
We supported a range of Composer-Curators including Jack Sheen who developed the event series ddmmyy. He said:
“It provided the funding and promotional support to make the projects possible. Before the Composer-Curator scheme ddmmyy was funded and promoted entirely by myself and the other composers involved in each concert, so this has allowed us to reach bigger audiences and programme bolder, more interesting concerts. It's been invaluable in shaping how the concerts have developed!”
This feedback has directly shaped the new Composer-Curator programme for 2015-16
Composer-Curator supports and represents a step of change in the world of live music touring, celebrating the often overlooked entrepreneurial composers and changing audience consumption and needs.
Composer-Curator aims to create a space for artists to make innovative new work, push new boundaries and develop and understand new music audiences like never before.
“An overwhelmingly positive response to austerity in recent years has been the increasing rise and variety of energetic DIY practices across the musical spectrum that Sound and Music champions. Composer-Curator celebrates this geographical and stylistic variety. The directness and authenticity of this work, imagined and staged by artists themselves, and its sheer energy, is a timely reminder that there is, indeed, “no recession of the imagination”. – Richard Whitelaw, Director of Programmes, Sound and Music
Sound and Music wants to honour the incredible passion, dedication and commitment of composers at the heart and grass roots of live production from across the UK.
This is your call.
