Following
the success of last May’s James MacMillan
Study Day, musicians from the Musicians From the Royal
Northern College Of Music
return to Wigmore Hall to
present a series of concerts and study events celebrating one of
Britain’s foremost composers, Alexander Goehr.

The day’s three concerts will feature works of instrumental,
vocal and chamber music that span a period of nearly
fifty years – from the late 1950s, following Goehr’s early days as a
student at the Royal Manchester College of
Music, through to the present day. The day closes with a performance
of Sing, Ariel, a cantata from the 1990s which pays homage
to, among others, his teacher Olivier Messiaen.

Alexander
Goehr
is a hugely influential
teacher himself, having held teaching positions around the world, in
Boston, Yale, Leeds, Beijing (where he is Honorary Professor)
and the University of Cambridge, where he was recently appointed
Professor Emeritus.

Two of Goehr’s former
pupils, George Benjamin and Anthony Gilbert,
will join him in two study events during the
day, an opportunity to hear the composer speak about his life, his
teaching and his music.
