Martin Georgiev

Award-winning composer-conductor Martin Georgiev holds a Postgraduate degree in Conducting from the Royal Academy of Music, London, where he has studied with Colin Metters, Sir Colin Davis and George Hurst, and was awarded with the Fred Southall Memorial Prize.
Georgiev is currently undertaking Doctoral research in Composition at the Royal Academy of Music, London. His PhD with principal supervisor Dr Philip Cashian and subsidiary supervision/tuition with Sir Peter Maxwell Davies, Sir Harrison Birtwistle and Julian Anderson amongst others is supported by the Wingate Foundation and central to it is a particular technique, described by him as 'morphing modality' which is based upon features of the medieval Bulgarian-Orthodox chanting tradition and inspired by the technique of morphing images in cinema.
He is a winner of several prizes for composition including The Grand Prize for Symphonic Composition dedicated to the 75th Anniversary of the Sofia National Philharmonic Orchestra in 2003, as well as a laureate of the International Composers' Forum Tactus in Brussels, Belgium in 2004 and 2008. He is at present a finalist for the Hindemith Prize of the Schleswig-Holstein Music Festival in Germany. His works have been performed in the UK, USA, France, Germany, Belgium, Canada, Bulgaria, Greece, Israel and Italy by performers including the Bulgarian National Radio Orchestra, Orchestre Nationale de Belgique, Sofia Philharmonic, Ensemble Musiques Nouvelles, Belgium, and the Royal Academy Manson Ensemble amongst others. His first Chamber Opera The Mirror with original libretto by Marike Van Aerde was premiered in London in June 2009 by the Azalea Ensemble under Jessica Cottis with patrons Lady Solti, Sir Charles Mackerras and Andrew Ritchie CBE.
He has appeared as a guest conductor with the Bulgarian National Radio Orchestra, Sofia National Philharmonic Orchestra, Varna Philharmonic, the London Bloomsbury Opera, the Royal Academy Concert Orchestra, and has been assistant conductor to Sir Colin Davis, Leif Segerstam and Tadaaki Otaka. He has been assistant music director at the Aldeburgh Festival Opera for the premiere of a new opera by Anna Meredith.
