Profile: Jenni Roditi
Information
Jenni's music is crossing over between a vernacular and a classical sensibility and is 'unbound by stylistic convention' (Musical Opinion Magazine). She studied as an undergraduate in composition and piano at the Guildhall leaving studying after she gained her first degree to work with Peter Wiegold and his group Gemini, and later Turning Point. She was the main theatrical vocalist on a number of projects, including Walton's Facade. She had three commissions from Lontano over a period of ten years (1991 - 2001) - producing two full length chamber operas and an operatic overture, all of which were premiered in London. She was also selected for Sound on Film (1998) - a BBC2/Arts Council commission with Jane Thorburn of After Image. In the last ten years she has been working on smaller projects - songs and extended songs, while researching new vocal and acoustic areas of interest such as classical Indian music, Balinese Temple singing, Gamelan, and crystal bowl healing sound. In the summer of 2009 a revival of her first opera was presented at the Arcola Theatre, opening their festival Grimeborn. InNovember 2009 her agent Red Orange presented Jenni's quartet, Ensemble Exchange, as the opening act of the LIFEM festival at Kings Place. She is currently in discussion with a presenter/producer in America regarding a West Coast tour of her first opera - pencilled in for summer 2011.
