Mauricio Pauly was born in San José, Costa Rica in 1976. His music has been performed in England, France, Germany, Hungary, Russia, Paraguay, Spain and the United States by ensembles including the JACK Quartet, Asamisimasa, the Ikarus Chamber Players, Tres Américas Ensemble, New York Miniaturist Ensemble, Iturriaga Quartet and Psappha Ensemble. Awards include the 2005 Pablo Sorozabal Composition Competition and at the 2005 Budapest Clavicembalo Foundation Composition Competition. In 2010 he received the Staubach Honoraria, a commission for a new work to be premiered in Darmstadt 2010. Upcoming concerts include a performance of Clinamen clinamen clinamen at the MATA Festival 2011 in New York and at the ISCM World New Music Days 2011 in Zagreb. Earlier in 2011 his piece To what depths of dark pigment for amplified cello, diffused audio and video was performed in New York as part of the Composers Now series. He has been supported by the Solti Foundation and the Bliss Trust. Mauricio is an electric bass player and has toured and recorded with multiple artists. He lives in Manchester, UK and teaches at the Royal Northern College of Music.
Upcoming works include a new piece for the Basel-based ensemble Eunoias and a new piece for Vertixe Sonora to be premiered at the Galician Centre for Contemporary Art next October.
Mauricio is a founding member of the áltavoz composers. The group released its first CD/download at the end of 2010 and has been awarded a grant from the American Music Center to record and release a disc of string quartets in collaboration with the JACK Quartet.
