Profiles
The Electronic Music Studios were established at Goldsmiths in 1968 by composer, instrument maker and musicologist Hugh Davies, and comprise a suite of working areas for undergraduate & postgraduate students wishing to explore the creative potential of studio equipment & audio software in relation to composition, live electronics, interactive performance, sound-art, acoustic ecology and research.
The EMS supports the Unit for Sound Practice Research (SPR), the Interlace concert series, and is a member of the Live Algorithms for Music research network.
The studio is the focus for a wide range of undergraduate & postgraduate
teaching and programmes, including the new BMus/BSc (Hons) Music Computing degree, delivered jointly by the Departments of Music and Computing.
Since 2001 the EMS has held an annual series of Max Summer courses, at both introductory and advanced levels, which have attracted participants from across the UK, Europe, North & South America, the Far East and Australia, including students, educators, mainstream musicians, composers, sound artists, and performers who utilize live electronics.
In 2007-8 the studio was involved in an AHRC-funded project to digitize the works of composer Daphne Oram, and the Daphne Oram Collection is now housed at Goldsmiths.
