 | | Backbeat – The Warehouse, London
I’m a big fan of percussion ensembles and this dynamic and explosive percussion ensemble Backbeat, promises to showcase a huge variety of percussion instruments from all over the world. They’ll be performing on 3 December at Sound and Music’s Cutting Edge 2009. Pieces by Ligeti, Xenakis, Ed Bennett, Damien Harron and a new work by Joe Cutler will undoubtedly energise and thrill.

Hosted by Scottish-based Red Note Ensemble, these regular informal chamber concerts are dedicated to showcasing new music by emerging and established composers. The forthcoming Noisy Nights series features fresh-off-the-page music for a seasonal ensemble of glockenspiel, toy piano and musical saw. Look out for Red Note’s call for new works in the New Year!

On 5 December you can take advantage of a rare chance to hear George Crumb’s orchestral music performed. The BBC Symphony Orchestra continues its Total Immersion series focusing on leftfield composers with a day of concerts, film and discussion about the American modernist.
 | | Warp20 – London Coronet
5 December also sees Warp celebrate its 20th anniversary with an all-nighter featuring live music from Broadcast, Plaid and Battles. Gutted I can’t be there.
| | For some home listening:
Have a listen to the young English producer/songwriter living in Paris who produced the albums 'Le Fil' and 'Music Hole' with French singer/songwriter Camille. His own debut - Body-Piano-Machine - is out now on Gaymonkey Records where all the sounds come from the BODY (body percussion, human beatbox & the singing voice), the PIANO, or the MACHINE – a Yamaha PSS 270 from 1986 whose instrument presets are wildly inventive and frequently absurd.
