Richard Bullen (b.1984) writes across instrumental, acousmatic and mixed media music and sees less and less difference between them all the time. He studied music at the University of Sheffield and has recently completed an MPhil in Composition at the University of Birmingham with Dr. Scott Wilson. Here he has been afflicted by BEAST (Birmingham ElectroAcoustic Sound Theatre), multi-channel composition and the acousmatic ethos, which he has allowed to penetrate his instrumental works and vice versa. Recent influences have come from a wide range of styles and genres including Cage, Bill Evans, Parmegiani, Sonic Youth, Dizzee Rascal and Xenakis. His music also takes inspiration from literature (Ishiguro, Rushdie) and film techniques introduced by the likes of Hitchcock, Kubrick, and Tarkovsky. He has recently written several pieces for soloist and live/interactive electronics and is always looking for new players and ensembles to work with.
