Stories from Summer School

Summer School Participants

Sound and Music’s annual summer school for young composers and creative musicians took place at the Purcell School between 5th and 11th August.  73 young composers aged 14 – 18 worked intensively with a creative team of 30 composers, musicians and artists to create their own original pieces of music, as well as participating in a range of workshops and taster sessions.  Every single piece was performed in a 5-concert marathon that stretched from Friday evening to Saturday afternoon.  The standard of pieces was extraordinarily high!

Thank you for the best week of my life.  It has opened my eyes to my own ability that I just didn't know I had which has inspired me to strive for the best with further education.” -- Katy, student

Firstly I felt that I was respected as being a musician who was slightly different than the others. Normally I feel like I'm 'bad' because I don't write pastiche and I don't play an orchestral instrument. I felt the complete opposite of this on the Summer School. Secondly it was fantastic to have my piece performed as my pieces are never performed in a concert. Lastly it was amazing to be surrounded by like-minded people who all had different interests but were all the same in that they were interested in music to some degree.” -- Ellie, Student

I would like to thank you and all your team for hosting what was most obviously a fabulous week for all those involved. Please pass on my thanks to all those involved in providing such a wonderful opportunity for young composers to spend time together, working hard on something they have a passion for, under the leadership of inspiring tutors.” -- Caroline, parent
