The British Music Collection: About

The British Music Collection: What is it?

So, you've landed here and you're probably wondering what the British Music Collection actually is. You might have heard of it before, or known it by its previous name: the British Music Information Centre, as it was known when it was established back in 1967. You've come to the right place to learn more! We hope we can answer all of your questions below...

The British Music Collection is a unique resource consisting of 70,000 scores and recordings from 20th and 21st century British composers, with more available to discover online.

The physical scores and recordings are stored at the University of Huddersfield in the state-of-the-art archive centre, Heritage Quay. Heritage Quay is open to the public, where visitors are able to listen to and read about new music throughout history up to the present day.

The British Music Collection online, at, is growing all the time, with an emphasis on new and inventive strands of curation to bring these composers and works to as large a global audience as possible. It is a living, breathing online version of the archive, with stories and many other fascinating connections woven through it, offering insight on a range of topics such as: composition, improvisation, historical composers, feminism and much, much more.

The collection became the first international music parter of the Google Cultural Institute in 2014.
