News: Deborah Pritchard has been selected as the composer-in-residence with Lichfield Festival

Deborah Pritchard for Lichfield Festival

Deborah’s work has been broadcast by BBC Radio 3, BBC Radio 4 and released by NMC, Signum and Nimbus. The London Symphony Orchestra will premiere her new orchestral piece in March 2016, as participant of the Panufnik Scheme, with previous performances by the Royal Northern Sinfonia, London Sinfonietta, Philharmonia Orchestra, BBC Singers and the English String Orchestra. She studied with Simon Bainbridge for her MMus Degree at the Royal Academy of Music and Robert Saxton for her DPhil at Worcester College, Oxford. Deborah holds a synaesthetic approach to composition and has worked closely with visual artists Maggi Hambling and Hughie O’Donoghue. 'Waves and Waterfalls' for chamber ensemble, premiered by Pierre-André Valade and the London Sinfonietta Academy, and 'Wall of Water' for solo violin and string orchestra, premiered by Kenneth Woods and the English String Orchestra with soloist Harriet Mackenzie were both written in response to Hambling’s work with the latter piece being commercially released by Nimbus and reviewed to critical acclaim in Gramophone.

“I'm really looking forward to being the Embedded composer at the Lichfield Festival with its diverse and exciting programme of events. I'll be creating a new interdisciplinary work that commemorates 100 years of the Battle of the Somme drawing inspiration from the beautiful paintings by artist Hughie O'Donoghue who frequently uses both First and Second World War themes in his work. He perceives his art as ‘emotional archaeology’ that should be ‘unearthed rather than observed’ and I hope to resonate with his aesthetic in the creation of my new piece with elements that can be experienced in unique spaces around the city and reach out to the community in a powerful way.”
