Paraorchestra composer residency now open

PLEASE LET US KNOW IF YOU WOULD LIKE THIS DOCUMENT IN A DIFFERENT FORMAT

The British Paraorchestra is the world’s first large-scale professional ensemble of disabled musicians, founded by British conductor Charles Hazlewood in 2012.

As part of the Portfolio programme, Sound and Music and the British Paraorchestra offer an opportunity for two composers to develop new small-scale works for the ensemble.

The Paraorchestra has a distinctive approach to collaborative working, and the selected composers will work closely with musicians from within the orchestra’s pool of players to develop pieces which showcase the group’s extraordinary abilities.

The residency will begin in January 2017. Two composers will be selected, and notified before the end of 2016.

Sound and Music's Creative Project Leader, Hannah Bujic explained:

The British Paraorchestra is a unique and exciting group of musicians. This is a fantastic opportunity to get to know the ensemble, which will suit composers looking to push their creative boundaries through collaborative working.

The Paraorchestra's Artistic Director, Charles Hazlewood, said:

We’re very excited to be partnering up with Sound and Music on this project and I’m sure the chosen composers will have a blast. The British Paraorchestra is a uniquely talented ensemble of musicians with the ability to flex themselves to a variety of different styles - we hope that the process will be musically enthralling for all.

About the British Paraorchestra

The British Paraorchestra is the world’s first, large-scale professional ensemble for musicians with disabilities, founded by British conductor Charles Hazlewood in 2012. Just as the Paralympics have achieved so effectively in sport, the British Paraorchestra has shifted perceptions of disability and disabled people by creating a visible platform for gifted disabled musicians to perform and excel at the highest level. The group debuted at the London 2012 Paralympics Closing Ceremony.

The Paraorchestra and Friends is a registered charity based in Bristol that aims to further the aims of the British Paraorchestra through an array of ground-breaking musical projects. The charity has a new home in At-Bristol, whose vision of a closely connected culture of arts and science chimes with the Paraorchestra’s mission to push creative boundaries and seek out diverse collaborations.
