The Cutting Edge: London

The Cutting Edge is one of the UK's most significant platforms for the presentation of new work. Since its inception in 1999, The Cutting Edge has run weekly concerts throughout the autumn at The Warehouse, a modern, refurbished rehearsal and performance space on London's South Bank. Most of the UK's leading new-music groups and soloists have taken part in the series, and many are regular contributors. The concerts reach a wider audience through broadcast on BBC Radio 3 and the Cutting Edge Tour.

What's it about?

The Cutting Edge bursts onto the scene this autumn, bristling with creativity, bringing you a barometer of musical evolution in Britain.

We are continually astounded at the range of compositional activity in the UK today. In 2009 we find composers collaborating with performers in devising processes; pioneering new technologies and partnering artists from other artforms. From the precise radicalism of Claudia Molitor and Markus Trunk to the disarming simplicity of Laurence Crane to the distorted soundworlds of ensemble [rout]; from James Weeks’ elegant musicianship to Damien Harron’s theatricality, with influences ranging from medieval music to Krautrock, there are as many musics as there are composers.

As well as celebrating the recent work of British artists, we are also looking forward to music by international compositional greats such as Louis Andriessen, Iannis Xenakis, John Cage and Morton Feldman.

This year’s series promises a voyage of discovery for even the most dedicated listener. We hope you enjoy exploring them all at this year’s Cutting Edge, in the intimate and welcoming surroundings of The Warehouse.
