 | Music Theatre Wales - Eight Songs for a Mad King
Date: Wednesday 17 April Venue: Aberystwyth Arts Centre, Aberystwyth Peter Maxwell Davies’ Eight Songs for a Mad King has become one of the contemporary classics of the music theatre repertoire. In this performance, Kelvin Thomas takes the lead role. Also in the programme is Vasco Mendonça’s Ping, a multi-media setting of Samuel Beckett’s stage monologue. Portuguese composer Mendonça is making a name for himself in Europe and this is a wonderful opportunity to experience his music in the UK. Read More>>
|  Sarah Dacey | Bath Lunchtime Concerts - Folksongs
Date: Friday 19 April Venue: St Swithin's Church, Bath This concert is the first of a new series curated by Kate Halsall in conjunction with Music Orbit. Featuring the wonderful soprano Sarah Dacey, the programme includes works by University of Kent students heard alongside music by Ravel, Britten and Judith Weir. Read More>>
|  Mark Simpson | BBC Symphony Orchestra - Simpson and Tippett
Date: Friday 19 April Venue: Barbican, London Mark Simpson, winner of the BBC Young Musician of the Year competition in 2006, has gained attention both as a clarinetist and as a composer. His short work, Sparks, was featured to critical acclaim in last year’s Last Night of the Proms. This programme features the London premiere of the 2008 work A mirror-fragment, paired with Tippett’s second symphony. Read More>>
|  Jonathan Harvey | New London Chamber Choir - Harvey and Tallis
Date: Thursday 25 April Venue: St Martin in the Fields, London Connections are often made between contemporary and early music, and this pairing of Harvey and Tallis is a highly tempting prospect. The New London Chamber Choir worked closely with Harvey for a number of years, and this concert looks like a wonderful opportunity to hear some of his choral works, including Forms of Emptiness, which was premiered by the New London Choir in 1986. Date: Saturday 27 April Venue: The Railway, Winchester This is the second live experimental music event by The Ologies, featuring a mix of analogue synthesis, live improvisation and ambient music by John Chantler, Seth Cooke & Dominic Lash, Pausal and Grohs. Set up by Matt Poacher and Joe Evans, this concert series aims to bring experimental music to Winchester, and each event features a different range of artists and genres. Read More>>
