The Sampler e-Shot features the most exciting events in new music and sound every fortnight, selected independently by a different guest previewer each issue. Events are selected from The Sampler website, the UK’s most comprehensive listings website for new music and sound, generated entirely by users.
This issue's guest previewer is Head of Development, Digital and Communications at Sound and Music, Nick Sherrard.

John Russell of Mopomoso | Mopomoso
Date: Sunday 20 January Venue: Vortex Jazz Club, London I have to confess an interest here, as Mopomoso head off on tour soon in partnership with Sound and Music. For those in London though, this promises to be a great chance to lose yourself in some free improv – never a bad way to start the New Year. Read More>>
| Ailís Ní Ríain | Delia Darlings
Date: Sunday 20 January Venue: Star and Shadow, Newcastle This is the first chance to experience three new commissions, by Ailís Ní Ríain, Caro C and Naomi Kashiwagi. Live visuals are supplied from Kara Blake, the award winning Canadian film director. Her film on Delia Darlings will be screened beforehand, and includes interviews with Brian Hodgson and Dick Mills of the Radiophonic Workshop, the founder of Electronic Music Studios Peter Zinovieff, musicians Peter Kember (Sonic Boom), Adrian Utley (Portishead) and Ann Shenton (Add N to X). | Trevor Wishart | Encounters in the Republic of Heaven - Trevor Wishart
Date: Wednesday 23 January Venue: National Media Museum, Bradford A couple of years ago I went to an event on architecture and cinema in the Media Museum that changed the way I looked at films I thought I already knew well. This event, in that same venue, sees Trevor Wishart talking about his recent work Encounters in the Republic of Heaven. The blurb describes how Wishart's piece ‘captures the melody, rhythm and sonority of spoken phrases in the North East of England’; that's where I grew up, so I can only recommend you go. That is if you like to have your perspectives challenged – which as you subscribe to The Sampler I will presume you do. Read More>>
| | RNCM Festival of Brass
Dates: Friday 25 - Sunday 27 January Venue: RNCM, Manchester There are 11 world premieres in the festival this year, which is a pretty good number. It’s a year of big numbers for brass in general - it's 100 years since the first piece was composed specifically for a brass band competition in England; it's the centenary of Benjamin Britten and George Lloyd; and it's also 400 years since the death of Giovanni Gabrieli. For me though, this just looks like a great weekend of music. Read More>>
| Spiro | Jez Lowe, Emily Portman Trio and Spiro
Date: Saturday 26 January Venue: Cecil Sharp House, London We were asking our Twitter followers last week about the live events they were most looking forward to in 2013. Spiro gigs came up twice which is high praise indeed. Londoners can catch them at Cecil Sharp House before they head up to Celtic Connections in Glasgow the following week. Read More>>
