Michael Finnissy | Ensemble Amorpha perform Finnissy
Date: Thursday 4 October Venue: Handel House Museum, London I love the idea of bringing living composers into the house where Handel lived and composed for 36 years. Michael Finnissy's Molly House, originally written for COMA in 2005, is part of a programme performed by relative newcomers Ensemble Amorpha. I find the way Michael lovingly incorporates the work of other composers (Gershwin, Verdi, Sullivan for example) into his music fascinating, and am very curious to hear this Handel-inspired work. | Sam Lee | Sam Lee and Friends - A new approach to folksong
Date: Friday 5 October Venue: Little Missenden Festival, Little Missenden Church, Amersham The two Mercury short-listed artists I’m rooting for are Plan B and Sam Lee, both of whom are appearing at LSO St Luke’s on Wednesday 10 October. The ballot for tickets is closed, but I noticed Sam is performing in Little Missenden. He learned his craft through a four-year apprenticeship with legendary late Scottish Traveller Stanley Robertson, last of the great ballad singers, and is now breathing new life into a traditional form. A strange choice for a Sampler preview? Maybe, but a phenomenal performer who can teach us all a lesson about contemporary communication. Read More>>
| Matthew Herbert | The BBC Radiophonic Workshop
Date: Sunday 7 October Venue: South Bank Centre, London The spirit of exploration of this iconic workshop, a vital and influential part of British electronic music history, is being reborn in a new initiative spear-headed by Matthew Herbert, producer, electronic musician, DJ, composer and much more. This is a day of talks, open sessions and events based around the work of the New Radiophonic Workshop, relaunched as part of thespace.org, in the presence of previous members of the original BBC Radiophonic Workshop. | Stuart Macrae | One Night: Two Operas
Dates: Saturday 9 October - Sunday 11 November Venue: The Anvil, Basingstoke For those who didn’t manage to see this double bill with works by Huw Watkins (music) and David Harsent (libretto), and Stuart MacRae (music) and Louise Welsh (libretto), at the Linbury last week, do try and catch it in Basingtoke. Two assured and contrasting additions to the repertoire, Ghost Patrol (Macrae and Welsh) in particular kept me on the edge of my seat and awakened thoughts that stayed with me long after the performance. The production tours until 11 November. Read More>>
| Tyondai Braxton | Tyondai Braxton and the London Sinfonietta
Date: Saturday 9 October Venue: Queen Elizabeth Hall, London Meanwhile at the QEH, you can hear Varèse’s Octandre and Takemitsu’s Rain Coming, alongside a foray into the US avant-garde and Indie scene, which promises a stimulating evening with guaranteed first-rate performances. With Tyondai Braxton’s Central Market in the second half, it will provide a live experience of juxtaposition that at its best is always illuminating and thought-provoking, true to the spirit of the Ether festival.
