Previewer's Picks
Bruce Nauman: Five Marching Men (1985)
Bruce Nauman: Days
Dates: until Sunday 16 September Venue: Institute of Contemporary Arts, The Mall, London A reflection on the way we measure, differentiate and commemorate time, this fascinating sound installation, utilising 14 flat-panel speakers, is definitely something not to be missed. It’s part of the ICA’s season on Sound. Also worth catching when you’re there is SOUNDWORKS, an online project featuring 100 sound works from all over the world in response to Nauman’s installation. Francis Bacon Opera - Stephen Crowe
Dates: Thursday 16 and Friday 17 August Venue: Riverside Studios, London A possible highlight of the sixth Tête à Tête Festival, this opera uses the text of an interview between Francis Bacon and Melvyn Bragg (as seen on an episode of the South Bank Show in 1986) as its source. Its ‘like two drunk guys after a football match’ according to the composer. Seems like great territory for opera to me. Read More>>
Anthony Kinsey
Anthony Kinsey at Bloom Live
Dates: every night of the week Venue: Bloom Live, Altrincham, Manchester It’s good to see live venues starting up and flourishing. This new live music venue serving south Manchester is a great platform for up-and-coming talent in Jazz and I hope gets well supported, as there are performances every night of the week. Look out for Anthony Kinsey on 18 August. Read More>>
Interzone Theatre - The Grinder
Dates: Wednesday 22 August - Friday 24 August Venue: Secret location in Shoreditch, London There’s always something very intriguing about these kind of events: a secret location, the need to bring a smartphone to the performance, and a company which bills itself as a ‘platform for augmented reality performance’. I have absolutely no idea what the music will be like but this seems like a risk worth taking. Read More>>
Juice Vocal Trio
juice at Handel House Museum
Date: Thursday 23 August Venue: Handel House Museum, London For nearly ten years this a cappella trio has cut elegantly through the categories of new music and charted an original course. This concert sees them performing new works as a result of an annual RNIB composition summer school for young people, in conjunction with Handel House. Read More>>
Ian Helliwell
Practical Electronica with Q&A
Date: Friday 24 August Venue: Summerhall, Edinburgh Low-fi electronic music is celebrated in this experimental documentary made by audio-visual artist Ian Helliwell, who also provides the soundtrack created with self-built tone generators and reel-to-reel tape loops. It details the work of British electronic music pioneer FC Judd, who remains a largely unknown figure. Hopefully this film will go some way towards changing that. Read More>>
