10 May // Northumberland

Arborescent is a series of infrequent projects inspired by the work of highly influential architect and composer, Iannis Xenakis (1922-2001). Taking inspiration from Xenakis' creative approach, Arborescent events showcase interpretations of specially commissioned graphic scores created by architects, musicians and visual artists, questioning the traditional role of 'composer'.

Richard Dawson: 'SING-SONG-SUNG'

Richard is a singer-painter from Newcastle. He's released four albums of songs, most recently the critically-acclaimed The Glass Trunk, as well as a number of electronic works under the pseudonym Eyeballs, composed extensively for film and theatre, and performed his intense, shamanistic folk art all over the world.

For Arborescent, Richard would like to invite audience members to compose a musical score by selecting and placing bastardised ping-pong balls in three fish tanks full of water.

Yvette Hawkins: 'Untitled'

Yvette Hawkins is a visual artist working across installation, sculpture, drawing and artist's books.  Her work reflects an interest in the exploration of measurement, time and the limitations and capabilities of the body as an instrument to explore the visible and invisible world. Yvette graduated from Newcastle University in 2007 and has since continued to work in the region, exhibiting within the UK and Europe.

For Arborescent, Yvette will create a large wall drawing which explores mark making through duration. Marks will be made onto paper within set time limits - 1 second // 3 second // ten second sections and be drawn intuitively with ink and/or pencil. The final piece will be abstract enough for the musicians to follow their own interpretations... so not necessarily needing to follow the rules she has set for herself.

Mawson Kerr: 'Shed Light'

Mawson Kerr was formed in 2010 by Will Mawson and Dan Kerr, Newcastle based architects who have designed and delivered a variety of award winning buildings. A dynamic studio with over 15 years experience Mawson Kerr deliver bespoke architectural designs catering for a variety of public and private client requirements; with experience in various sectors including, residential, education, sustainabilty, commercial, heritage, cultural, civic, leisure and health.

'Shed Light' plays on the theme of light and the shadows its produces. The audience will be back lit with light and their shadows cast on the ‘receiver’. The shadow ‘receiver’ will also respond to sound from the musical score through movement thus changing the shadows.
