Audience Development Hub

Here at Sound and Music we are passionate about growing new audiences for new music.

We care about supporting composers, artists and audiences alike to discover the range and breadth of work being created across the UK – to meet the creators, to share experiences and to change and challenge perceptions.

Our aim is to amplify, share and learn.

Below you can find out about our recent audience development work, and learn about how you can get involved.

CoMA Partnership

We are currently working with CoMA (Contemporary Music for All) to initiate an audience development audit for the 2018 CoMA festival.

CoMA was founded in 1993 to enable musicians of all abilities to participate actively in contemporary music. An integral part of CoMA’s work is their annual festival which includes close to fifty ensembles, performers and organisations.

CoMA is seeking to find out more about its festival audiences: their motivations, engagement and interaction with the organisation and its events. Sound and Music is helping to develop an interactive data capture experiment that will be used at the CoMA Festival in March 2018. We look forward to sharing the findings and feedback later in the year.

Compose. Create. Engage.

Research has suggested that traditional commissioning models are struggling to meet the needs of today's composers. Does crowdfunding offer a viable alternative? We are partnering with PledgeMusic and a cohort of five compoers to test crowdfunding models that put composers into direct contact with audiences around the world.

Composer-Curator is Sound and Music’s national touring programme which supports entrepreneurial composers and artists from a range of disciplines looking to create their own opportunities by curating their own events. In 2017 we worked with the cohort to implement new audience data capture methods, as a means of gaining richer and more detailed insights into new music audiences across the UK.
