Young Composers

Go Compose is a national project encouraging more young people to compose, offering them opportunities to work alongside professional composers and musicians to help develop their musical voice. Sound and Music work with a diverse list of partner organisations to run projects across the UK including music education hubs, university music departments, professional ensembles, music charities and youth projects.

You can find details on some of our past and present partners on the right-hand side of this page.

Who is it for?

The projects are generally aimed at 12-18 year olds, with several specially created for young people from backgrounds traditionally underrepresented in new music. Each Go Compose project is unique, shaped by the project leaders and by the young composers themselves, but all introduce the participants to new and creative approaches to composing, broadening their knowledge of topics such as the idiosyncrasies of writing for different instruments to creating new electronic instruments and using sampling software.

Arts Award

As an Arts Award Provider, Sound and Music supports young people working towards their Arts Awards. All of our Go Compose projects can be included as activity for your Arts Award and we can assist you with reporting this.

How can I get involved?

If you’re a young musician interested in making music in your area, you can find the latest opportunities on our Go Compose site, or email us at education@soundandmusic.org if you have any questions.

Our next opportunity for aspiring young composers and creators will be our Go Compose Inspire Days on 28th - 30th July 2020. These three, day-long online workshops will introduce young people with little to no experience of composing to songwriting, marketing, electronic music production and audio manipulation. You can find out more about these sessions here.

How can I partner with Sound and Music to support young composers?

If you are an organisation or individual interested in working in partnership with Sound and Music on a Go Compose project, please contact us on education@soundandmusic.org.
