Meet the latest recipients of the Francis Chagrin Awards

The Francis Chagrin Award is for composers looking for that quick top-up to get them to the next step in creating new work.

With three rounds a year, meet the latest artists who have benefitted from that extra bit of money to make their projects a reality.

Rodrigo Camacho

Rodrigo Camacho

Rodrigo B. Camacho is a Portuguese composer, performance designer and artistic director. Formally trained as a classical pianist and composer, his practice profoundly changed once theatre, dance and performance more broadly came into the game. Dramatic expression, the physicality of gestures and choreography became as important as sound itself and currently, all his works live interdisciplinarily. He is thus interested in language and communication, emergence and game theory, and in the dichotomic relationships between structuralism and randomness, chaos and complexity. Rodrigo is
currently the co-director of the New Maker Ensemble, a London-based group for new music and performance art.

Rodrigo Camacho said:

"I receive this award gladly in that it will definitely be a good push towards the proper development of "The Economics of Terror", an ambitious piece I am making with the New Maker Ensemble, which is based on several different (often colliding) perspectives on the matter of terrorism, including some performer's personal experiences of it. I will use
this award to facilitate my research efforts, which mostly means that I will be
attending exhibitions, theatre plays and generally gaining access to other works, so to develop a comprehensive, multifaceted and well-informed position on the issue. I can now also properly conduct my interview based creative research practice, generally affording to spend more time in fruitful collaborative sessions with performers. Materials will, in a very intense way, eventually become organically owned by performers' gestures and actions, thus generating a more impactful final product."

Simon Fell said:

"I’m very pleased to see that the Chagrin Award is even-handed in
supporting composers of all kinds – old as well as young, media-irascible as
well as media-friendly, established as well as up-and-coming. I look forward to
spending the money wisely!

The Chagrin Award will enable the preparation of parts and other performance materials for a concert of four of my compositions at Kings Place (London) in January. The
concert represents the first London performance of my composed music after a 10+ year interval."
